Synopsis
for SATB and piano or organ
Psalmi Penitentiales comprises three settings of sections from the Penitential Psalms, interspersed with four arrangements of the well-known Ubi caritas plainchant. Often recited during Lent, the three psalms that Bullard has chosen give expression to feelings of penitence and remorse. The setting, for mixed four-part choir with organ or piano accompaniment, responds to the drama and changes of mood within the Latin text with expressive melodic lines and richly varied
harmonies. The psalms may also be performed separately, giving the work added flexibility in performance. Psalmi Penitentiales is an excellent companion to Bullard's Wondrous Cross, ideal for choirs seeking a substantial choral work for Lent and Passiontide.

What Reviewers Are Saying
Despite being more complex than some of Bullard's other works, its striking harmonic design and easy lyricism make it very rewarding to sing. * Mark Bellis, Cathedral Music, November 2019 * The organ accompaniment rarely doubles the parts, instead developing its own motivic language and contributing atmospheric soundscapes . . . The entire work . . . makes relatively light demands on choir and organist, yet yielding maximum effect for moderate investment . . . The musical language is conventional, pushing few boundaries. Bullard's rhythm is flexible, adhering to stress patterns in the Latin text, yet even the mixed meter poses few counting challenges
for singers. This highly accessible work would find a welcome home at a Lenten evensong or perhaps even within the context of a Maundy Thursday liturgy with foot washing. * Jason Overall, Journal of the the Association of Anglican Musicians, March 2019 *
