Synopsis
No one is as happy as the Scandinavians. Year after year, either one Nordic country or another tops the World Happiness Report. But what can we learn from their concept of happiness - or lykke? Pronounced "lug-kah", this Danish and Norwegian word embraces not only the idea of contentment but also good fortune and the importance of counting one's blessings. The message of lykke is clear - happiness lies not in acquiring status or piling up possessions, but in embracing simplicity and unselfishly sharing our good luck with others. But in our hectic modern world, how do we apply this philosophy to our own lives? By looking more closely at the Nordic way of life, we can learn how an appreciation of the simple things - such as good design, a better understanding of nature and the importance of socialising with friends - will transform our own lives. Money doesn't buy happiness. If you keep it all to yourself, that is.
