Mechanical Vibration
Analysis, Uncertainties, and Control, Fourth Edition. Mechanical Engineering
Synopsis
Mechanical Vibration: Analysis, Uncertainties, and Control, Fourth Edition addresses the principles and application of vibration theory. Equations for modeling vibrating systems are explained, and MATLAB (R) is referenced as an analysis tool. The Fourth Edition adds more coverage of damping, new case studies, and development of the control aspects in vibration analysis. A MATLAB appendix has also been added to help students with computational analysis. This work includes example problems and explanatory figures, biographies of renowned contributors, and access to a website providing supplementary resources.

What Reviewers Are Saying
"This fourth edition of Vibration, a broad and deep exposition not only of vibration, but also of system uncertainties and control, has been expanded and re-written in many parts. The comprehensive coverage includes elementary as well as advanced and professional topics. There are numerous engineering case studies, new appendices on damping models, and extensive MATLAB resources. The exposition of concepts is careful and precise and yet the presentation is casual, a combination that makes the book remarkably easy and enjoyable to read."
-Fai Ma, Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley
"Mechanical vibration continues to permeate through every aspect of engineering design including automotive, aerospace, electronics, machine tools, robotics and structural systems. This text provides a well-integrated, clear and concise discussion of the theory and practice of mechanical vibration as well as the related subjects of random vibration and vibration control. It presents many real-world examples and meaningful case studies that motivate the subject. The examples and case studies are further highlighted by some quite interesting photographs. The text also contains a plethora of solved problems and detailed derivations, not to mention the biographies of famous personalities who have had a significant impact in this area. This fourth edition has been significantly enhanced and reflects the continuously growing academic and industrial experiences of the authors, as well as technical advances since the first edition of the book. They are to be congratulated for writing in a clear, concise and engaging style that makes vibration, which is a challenging and important subject, accessible to engineering students in various disciplines."
-Thomas R. Kurfess, George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology
"For a broad range of engineers involved in structural analysis, this is, according to my opinion, a definitely "must have" book. It is perfectly relevant to numerous applications of vibrational analysis in civil, mechanical, aerospace, and biomechanical engineering fields. Although it is written primarily as a textbook, an experienced reader will find it equally useful as a systematic reference of major modern concepts, solutions, and demonstrations cases. Major challenge of vibration-related publications is to find a proper balance between "mathematical" and "applied" sides of the subject. The authors did find the right optimum emphasizing, from one hand, motivation, modeling representation of reality, and lessons learned from generated results and, on the other hand, providing rigorous mathematical implementations in a very clear and logical way. The book is extremely well written, making it very easy to read and go through numerous demonstration examples. The new fourth edition is significantly expanded and includes new results on important advanced issues, e.g., on damping models. Another important enhancement is an appendix with extensive MATLAB solutions for quick implementation into engineering practice. Among others, I especially value included chapters on random vibrations, demonstrating importance of probabilistic solutions of structural reliability. It is also a pleasure indeed to read enclosed historical anecdotes and life sketches and understand development of modern mechanics as a process."
-Mark Gurvich, Technical Fellow, United Technologies Research Center
"Whether tuning a suspension, maximizing tire grip, honing a cylinder bore or determining (just enough) engine isolation, the topic of vibration is critical to vehicle design. This book is impressive, not only in its scope, but also in its approach. Now in its 4th edition, the already well thought-out presentation of material has been continually refined. The examples and derivations are quite detailed and generally easy to follow, while the prose, pictures and bios provide unique context that make the subject matter surprisingly engaging. Aside from making this broad topic approachable to students, this book serves as a concise reference for professionals to review various useful principles. The inclusion of an overview of basic (time domain) controls, as well as random vibration, adds additional value and perspective."
-Jim Sadauckas, Staff System Engineer, Vehicle Dynamics & Simulation, Harley-Davidson Motor Company
"In the design of vehicles, vibration is a constant issue as it influences complete vehicle properties such as cabin comfort, driving performance, and vehicle dynamics and can lead to fatigue, damage, and failure. Control of vibration is a key factor in successful vehicle design, making this book covering the important subject of modern vibration analysis highly relevant. The book connects theory with practice, includes many worked examples and case studies, and is a resource on vibration that imparts deep physical as well as mathematical understanding to the student or engineer. It is highly recommended."
-Julian Weber, BMW Group, Research, New Technologies, Innovations, Head of Innovation Projects E-Mobility
"I have heard people say that good writing has a 'voice.' Mechanical Vibration by Benaroya, Nagurka, and Han has a voice that tells a rich story about vibration analysis in all its glory - from the beauty of it mathematics through its impact on our daily lives to the history of the people who brought it to life."
- Keith Buffinton, Bucknell University, USA
"Mechanical Vibration: Analysis, Uncertainties and Control is a substantial textbook that covers the broad topic of mechanical vibration. But it is the extensive content and the distinctive format and style that make this a particularly notable book and one which is well suited to those learning the subject for the first time. The Fourth edition brings a reorganized structure with an updated and expanded content. The content is undoubtedly extensive - with helpful footnotes and references to more advanced texts where necessary - and includes material ranging from senior undergraduate to postgraduate level."
