Synopsis
My Box-Shaped Heart is a powerful story of an unlikely friendship from Rachael Lucas, author of The State of Grace. Holly's mum is a hoarder, and she is fed up with being picked on at school for being weird . . . and having the wrong clothes . . . and sticking out. All she wants is to be invisible. She loves swimming, because in the water everyone is the same. Ed goes to the swimming pool because everything else in his life has changed. In his old life he had money; was on the swim team; knew who he was and what he wanted. In his old life his dad hit his mum. Holly is swimming in one direction and Ed's swimming in the other. As their worlds collide they find a window into each other's lives - and learn how to meet in the middle.

Newspapers & Magazines
a fun, lighthearted, quick romance read. That deals with mental health too. * Ellie in Book Heaven * So vivid that the characters stayed with you long after the last page. Every character was completely true to life, the scenarios so easily recognisable. Not afraid to touch on difficult subjects - but done in a way that wove them naturally into the story. Highly recommend -- Cari Rosen * Gransnet * A powerful, romantic and life-affirming story which tackles tricky social issues and left me feeling totally inspired. * Cathy Bramley * So vivid that the characters stayed with you long after the last page. Every character was completely true to life, the scenarios so easily recognisable. Not afraid to touch on difficult subjects - but done in a way that wove them naturally into the story. Highly recommend -- Cari Rosen * Gransnet * As always Rachel Lucas writes in a style that is easy to read and engages the reader. Making it suitable for 14+ confident and less confident readers. The book has 255 well written pages that contains lovely characters and has an intriguing storyline. Well worth a read. * Readingzone * I wrote My Box Shaped Heart in part because I wanted to explore the impact of parental mental health issues. As someone who has experienced my own mental health challenges I wanted to write about it from the child's perspective. I think the more open we are about the subject, the easier our children will find to talk about it. * Rachael Lucas in The Big Issue * Romantic, emotional and with an exquisite young love at its centre, My Box-Shaped Heart is a tale of our times told with understanding, warmth and a life-affirming optimism that makes it a joy to read. * Lancashire Post * Lucas' second YA novel deals with poverty and domestic violence while remaining joyful and hopeful. * Metro *
