Synopsis
This book is the closest most of us will come to spending an extended period of time in the Klimke stable. Ingrid Klimke details her personal programme of bringing a horse along through the stages of progressive development and, in doing so, explains her training philosophy. She provides guidelines and exercise to ensure success without stress at each milestone. It's a wonderful insight into how Klimke customises the work to suit the individual horse. The result is surely a joyful partnership between rider and horse that will go the distance.

Klimke has written an instructional book for sport horse fanatics that succeeds where many others fall short. ... She mixes in tidbits and funny anecdotes about her horses with the general training principles she uses to help them progress. The instructional sections are short and sweet and include diagrams and measurements, so you can set up her exercises. ... [A]n inside look at the training program that has brought [Klimke] so many accolades. She had the great, enviable advantage of being the daughter of the late legendary German dressage master Dr. Reiner Klimke. Ingrid Klimke carries on the family legacy and then some, excelling in dressage-although her primary sport is eventing-and becoming what many call the world's finest horseman of our time.
This isn't a standard how-to dressage text. Instead, it's the closest most of us will come to spending an extended period of time in the Klimke stable. Klimke takes us through "My Guiding Principles for Training," including the equipment and the people who help keep Team Klimke and its horses happy and healthy. She discusses the elements of her training programs, from cavaletti to jumping exercises. In the final third of the book-perhaps the most fascinating-Klimke discusses "My Horses: Character Types from Shy to Go-Getter."
She introduces some of her top horses, and outlines her training plan for each horse. It's a wonderful insight into a top rider's training decisions and how she customizes the work to suit the individual horse. Olympic gold-medal-winner Ingrid Klimke was born under a bright star when it came to fulfilling dreams of equestrian greatness. This review could have been the shortest ever written. One word would have sufficed - Wow!

Before I had read a word of the text I was hooked on this book. It is a joy to look through, full of fabulous colour photographs printed on glossy paper. Just a quick glimpse is enough to show the reader how much Klimke's love for her horses and equestrian sport are very much in evidence. The cover image says it all; a joyful rider with a huge smile and her horse full of controlled power and spirit looking as if he would be grinning too.

The subtitle title of this book is 'An Olympic Medalist's Winning Methods for a Joyful Riding Partnership.' The book does exactly what it says on the tin.

This isn't a book to learn now to train your horse or to ride better, but it is certainly a vital one to help riders understand that riding shouldn't be forced, it is a celebration of the bond and should be required reading for anyone who competes. -- Louise Broderick
