Synopsis
Looking at the night sky, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's all quiet up there in space. But you'd be wrong. Extreme events are forever unfolding: galaxies explode, cosmic debris hurtles through the heavens and our own Milky Way is on a collision course with the giant Andromeda galaxy. Mayhem moulded the cosmos, shaped life on Earth and at times threatened to end it. With an enduring sense of wonder, through cataclysms great and small, Bob Berman presents a destructive history of our universe.

The Universe Explained
Excellent - 8 out of 10
This book is about as far from my usual genre as you can get but surprisingly I not only enjoyed it but learnt lots about the universe. Bob Berman explains his and others idea’s clearly and concisely with easy to understand examples perfect for readers like me! If you have an interest in space and the universe Bob Berman’s books are a great staring point. Starting by explaining the nature of cataclysms & supernovas in the past he moves on the present and predicts events right up to Haleys’s Comet in the year 2061. Its interesting reading and gets you thinking way outside your normal day to day existence. Most people have heard of the Big Bang but to be able to have it explained in nine pages was a revelation to me, not being scientifically minded, it seemed like some mythical being, now it’s clear in my mind. If you have any interest in the universe I truly recommend getting this book, there is so much to learn, I even found out how a microwave actually works as opposed to it just warms things from the middle out!
Newspapers & Magazines
'Blithely engaging, a glittering planetarium that is...a stage for astonishing and unnerving spectacles... I greatly admire [Berman's] ability to lucidly explain astrophysics to the nonscientist. The brio that he brings to cosmic havoc makes much of Boom! a delicious guilty pleasure.' * Wall Street Journal * 'Fascinating, terrifying and entertaining in equal measure, this is an expert guide to the deadliest hazards in the universe, on Earth and beyond.' -- Paul Parsons, science journalist and author 'This lively menagerie of astrophysical oddities will entertain any reader who's ever wondered what the biggest, most dangerous "bangs" in the universe might be.' * Publishers Weekly * 'Berman writes with verve and vigour...a pleasing excursion into the hows and whys of how the universe - our universe, anyway - took shape and how it works - except when it doesn't.' * Kirkus *
