The latest book in the "Twenty to Make" series is Sugar Dogs by Frances McNaughton, which seems like a natural addition to the range since Frances has already authored Sugar Animals, Sugar Faries, Sugar Birds, Sugar Scaries, Mini Sugar Bags and Mini Sugar Shoes and Chocolate Animals in the same series. Maybe it's because I'm a dog-lover that this book is my favourite to date, and the difficulty for me is in choosing which to have a go at making first as they are all so cute. Frances has simplified making the dogs as much as possible, so that even beginners without lots of specialist equipment will still be able to get good results, but the book isn't just amateurs as even more advanced sugarcrafters will be able to pick up some useful tips. I was interested to see her use of sugar candy supports for legs, as it's often difficult to get animals to appear to be standing on thin legs with relatively heavy bodies. These sugar candies are what were called sweet cigarettes when I was younger, which are now politically incorrect, so have been re-branded as sugar candy sticks, and they don't have the red end, so they don't resemble cigarettes anymore - which is good, as for the dogs you don't what them to have the red ends. Frances does explain that you can make your own sticks from modelling paste and leave them to dry, but using the ready-made ones will save time. What I liked about this idea is that it means the dogs are completely edible as I've seen so many other books using dry spaghetti or even wooden or plastic supports which could cause choking. As well as finished pictures of each dog, there are also photos of each stage of the construction, so you get an idea of the proportion that all the pieces should be before they are assembled. So whether you prefer smaller dogs like Bichon Frise or Yorkshire Terrier or big dogs like a Great Dane or Dalmation, then there's probably your favourite in the book, or certainly there's enough information to adapt one of the 20 different breeds featured to look like your favourite pooch. * Womans Weekly * July 14
