Synopsis
Now in its third edition, Rough Shooting is both a practical guide to sport with dog and gun and also a celebration of the simple pleasures of informal shooting. In an age dominated by the organised driven shoot, the author reminds us of the quality and variety of sport which can still be enjoyed by the sportsman and his dog. Rough Shooting is a clear and concise guide to all the principal sporting quarry species, to sporting guns and cartridges and to the choice and training of a gundog. Practical hints on shooting tactics are accompanied by helpful guidance on shoot management and habit improvement for game and wildfowl. Predation control is also covered. Mike Swan writes about clothes and equipment and the section on Legal and Ethical Consideration has been fully updated. The use of decoys is covered and an Appendix gives details of field sports organisations. The book is handsomely illustrated with photographs and original by Jonathan Yule, the noted sporting artist. Rough Shooting is an essential book for anyone interested in this field sport.

Newspapers & Magazines
Although so much of shooting's focus is upon organised driven-shooting nowadays, Mike Swan celebrates the simple pleasures of informal rough-shooting, where the quality and variety is equally impressive. He offers practical tips on shooting, management, habitat improvement, what to wear, the equipment needed and much more. Subjects are dealt with in individual chapters so the reader can navigate the book easily, allowing him to get straight to the relevant information before picking up his gun and putting what he has read into practice. Mike's huge experience means that his advice is absolutely sound and based on personal knowledge, and although the book is aimed at those who are relatively new to the sport, there is a lot that will be valuable to the more experienced Guns. Mike writes clearly and concisely, managing to say a great deal in a short space; the result is a book which is a pleasure to read, despite being crammed with information and makes a fine introduction to our sport. * Shooting & Conservation Magazine * Drawing on many decades of advice from right around the shooting world the beautifully illustrated pages really bring the sport to life, Perfect for novices looking to get into the sport and for older guns looking to brush up.
