FROM DISABILITY RIGHTS UK -- A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR ANYONE INVOLVED WITH WELFARE LAW, OR DISABILITY ISSUES

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

Disability rights and benefits, including age-related and bereavement benefits, are all out there, but how do you ascertain which ones you -- or your clients -- or those you care for, are entitled to? And how are they accessed?

The usual response to this problem is to trawl the Internet, which, if you’ve ever tried it, can take ages. Internet research in this area, more often than not, reveals uncomfortably the true meaning of the word ‘web’.

Help is ever to hand however, within the pages of this easy to read, easy to use Handbook published annually by Disability Rights UK. The sub-title indicates its scope. It is ‘a guide to benefits and services for all disabled people their families, carers and advisers’ -- and that of course, includes legal advisers.

Interestingly, there is a concise section on legal references designed to steer lawyers and other advisers to the correct sources of information and advice under the headings of ‘Finding Case Law’… ‘Finding Acts and Regulations’… Official Guidance, and more. Also note the lengthy list of Acts, from CA; Care Act 2014 -- to WTC (E&MR) Regs; Working Tax Credit (Entitlement and Maximum Rate) Regulations 2002 (ST 2002/2005).

Yes, some of the material seems complex, but rest assured; this is truly a user-friendly publication for a wide range of readers, the disabled in particular -- and considering the wealth of information it contains, it is clearly and logically organized throughout.

Published in handy paperback format. It functions as a genuine time-saver – with a host of time-saving features (including the directly relevant Internet links). Those either offering or seeking advice across an extraordinarily wide range of welfare issues will find it invaluable.

Produced by a team of twenty expert contributors and over a dozen ‘checkers’ checking accuracy, this is reliably the most accurate handbook currently available on this often complex and certainly diverse and sensitive subject. The fact that it is now in its fortieth edition indicates its enduring accuracy, authority and appeal.

And here’s another service offered by Disability Rights UK Publications. Called the ‘Handbook Updater’, it’s published bi-monthly from June 2015 to February 2016; and arrives by email in printable format. For a small extra subscription, it keeps you completely up to date with legislative changes throughout the year.

Anyone and everyone personally or professionally involved with disability or welfare issues really do need this Handbook.

It is ideal for Citizens’ Advice Bureaus, lawyers of course and civil servants in the relevant government departments, or indeed researchers or anyone interested in this subject.

If you fit into any of these categories this Handbook definitely belongs on your desk.
