Engaging introduction to a different area of science
Excellent - 9 out of 10
This book focuses on Annabelle and Harry, whose dog Milly disappears. After discovering that other dogs are missing, they decide to catch the dog thief. They logically look for clues, carefully organizing and examining them. They follow the steps of identifying possible suspects and using their evidence to eliminate suspects and build a stronger case. Their mother being a scientist who focuses on DNA and works from her garden shed lab makes it that much easier for them to do this, so long as they can keep her from finding out! I won't spoil the ending by saying if they are able to catch the thief or not, so you'll just have to read it to find out.
I found this story to be a unique and engaging way to introduce the ideas of DNA and forensic science. They children are very meticulous in their methods, focusing on ensuring their data is labeled and kept safe from contamination. These methods are taught through the conversations the children have during the processes. The author manages to keep the topics from becoming dry by maintaining the tension caused by the missing dog. And, being children, they sometimes make risky choices that keep the tension high. I haven't yet introduced my daughter to this book because I think she might be a bit young, but I expect she'll be ready for it soon. Just as a warning, there are some parts that more sensitive children might find difficult, such as when the missing dogs are caged and drugged. That's the main reason I'm waiting a bit. I'd recommend reading this book in advance of giving it to your child if unsure. And it gives you the opportunity to bone up on this area of scientific development. It's a solid book that I can definitely see as the start of an entertaining and educational series.
