The Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town has a proud history of commissioning new South African plays. In 1997, however, the first formalised steps were taken to create what has become the Baxter's New Writing Programme. This title bears testimony to the success of the success of the New Writing Programme. It brings together, in print, four remarkable plays: Coloured Son X As the Koekie crumbles Suip! Glass roots. This publication is also an collaboration between publisher and theatre organisation, conceived out of the recognition of the importance of conserving the plays of our time. Not only for posterity but also to validate the value of the arts to new and developing writers. New plays are critical to the lifeblood of South African theatre.
