Fifteen stories and novel excerpts, written during the last two decades by a fascinating group of politically engage, staunchly feminist, and stylishly postmodern writers. Editor Buchler (who also translated seven stories) contributes a solid "Introduction" that emphasizes the benign and destructive neglect with which the Czech literary establishment has treated women writers, and sorts out their differing uses and transformations of traditional narrative devices. Their stories are of uneven quality, but the best are gems: Alzbeta Serberova's witty "E=mc "; Zdena Tomin's "Joseph Stalin" (which skillfully blends the political with the personal); and, most notably, Tereza Bouckova's superbly constructed, menacing, and resonant "The Women from the Region of Tyre." On balance, a very welcome volume. (Kirkus Reviews)
