A study of Thomas Aiskew Larcom, who was trained as a military surveyor, and rose to become Under-Secretary for Irish affairs in Dublin. He served in a variety of government posts from the Ordnance survey to Dublin Castle, and is a figure frequently encountered in the history of Ireland between the 1820s and 1860s. Larcom was assigned to the Board of Works in the famine years, his system prevailed in the evaluation and recording of the Irish Census of 1841, and he was on social terms with Dr and Mrs Wilde.
