Now that prenatal development has been traced scientifically and even poetically (with pink and blue parts floating dreamily in utero) so that every preschooler has access to the facts, it's time for Baby, a self-sufficient fetus with the body of a toddler and a mind of her own, who romps and lounges within the otherwise bare outline of her mother's long skirt. Baby recognizes a soft berth when she sees one, and neither her mother's urging nor the threats and promises of sister, brother, Grandmother and Grandfather can induce her to come out - until Daddy comes home with kisses for the family and Baby, yelling "HERE I COME," emerges to receive hers. Playfully old-fashioned black and white drawings reinforce the tone of affectionate whimsy that marks this (pro)creative demonstration of the rewards of growing up. (Kirkus Reviews)
