This study of the career trajectories of black professionals in the UK is based on a "five-years-on" follow-up of 100 black students who attended Britain's largest social work training course in the late 1980s, and on a participative seminar-based action-research project undertaken by the authors with 50 black managers, practitioners and social work educationalists in the social welfare field. The findings of the reserach outlined in the work form the basis for suggestions about how the potential of black professionals can be realized through: more effective recruitment strategies; forms of training and education that allow black people space to reflect critically upon the construction of their identities and self-management skills developed in a "white" world; revised employment practices; career development strategies and techniques for students, professionals and managers.
