The primary goal of this text is to produce working people who can communicate via the written work. The secondary goal is to teach the use of a work processor for creating that written communication. Not a primer in beginning writing or business communications, this text assumes students of varying experience with workplace writing including expository work in schools. Rather than drilling on formal rules, this text attempts, by example, critique and practice, to develop an innate feel for clear writing. The objects of this type of instruction probably have labored over rules in the past and failed to absorb them. They may benefit from the approach of this text which is perhaps the mental equivalent of kinetic learning, a conditioning process. The text can be used in either of two ways, as the basis for classroom lectures with laboratory work, or as an independent study project where the student reads the text, performs the exercises and submits the results for evaluation. With the many examples and sample solutions, students may gain a satisfactory level of writing skill without a high degree of instructor involvement.
In writing instruction, this text concentrates on the most important workplace documents - memos and letters, reports and proposals - both internal, within a particular organization and external, for customers, other organizations, funders and so forth.
