What Reviewers Are Saying
The Guyana-born winner of the 1983 Commonwealth Poetry Prize offers her first collection of poems for children, evoking her native country in graceful cadences and usually comprehensible dialect that will occasionally be best understood aloud ("Me mudder pound plantain mek fufu/Me mudder catch crab reek calaloo stew"). Exquisitely detailed soft-pencil drawings extend the quiet incidents, gentle insights, and pungent portraits. A welcome new voice. (Kirkus Reviews)
