A close reading of Fielding's novels reveals that they give pride of place to carnal motives in portraying their characters, including their heros and heroines, and reveals that, when Fielding was effectively banned from the stage by the Licensing Act of 1737, he did not cease to be the English "Aristophanes" but went on expressing his mockery, sexuality and anarchy in novels that are deceptive in their appearance as "well-structured" or conventionally moral in tendency.
