Gemma O'Connor's previous novels have established her reputation as a writer of great complexity, who delights in unravelling layer upon layer of mystery as past secrets are unearthed and the passage of time casts light upon events of years ago. The young hero of this latest book is 18-year-old Gil Recaldo, who is determined to find out the truth about his background, little realizing how many skeletons he is going to uncover. Gil was only eight when Evangeline Walters, his father's mistress, was murdered. She was loathed by everyone for her spiteful tongue and there were many who had no cause to regret her death. When Gil's abusive father, Valentine Sweeney, died in a storm at sea, it seemed that the case could be tidied away. Sweeney was the chief suspect, and the only other witness, Gil's great friend and protector John Spain, was drowned as he chased after Sweeney. Gil's mother, Cressida, married again, starting a new life with Frank Recaldo, the policeman who had been involved with the Walters murder. They moved to Dublin and had a daughter, Frank adopted young Gil and the past, it seemed, could be put behind them. But as Gill grows up, he begins to put two and two together and comes up with even more questions. Why does his mother keep visiting the terminally ill Halcyon, Evangeline's brain-damaged daughter? Who is the mysterious Smiler O'Dowd? What secrets has John Spain hidden away in his cottage? Gil vows to return to Trianach and solve the mystery once and for all. This is a beautifully crafted tale, proving how dangerous it is to assume that secrets buried in the past will stay buried. Time and again, the truth begins to seep through the cracks in the carefully erected facade built to protect Gil; a facade he must eventually tear down. The press have wind of what really happened all those years ago and manage to link the scandal to Frank, now a successful thriller writer. Relentlessly, they close in on their victims: it is only a matter of time before they catch up with Frank and Cressida - with dreadful consequences. (Kirkus UK)
