Carnival life backgrounds the story of Bat Fitler's retreat from a society in which he can find no place and his fight to conquer his growing love for one of the freaks. A lone wanderer he drifts into a job offered him by the Fish Boy, makes a big play for tail shaker Emmy Klaus when the Fish Girl's armless abnormality disgusts and attracts him and watches the kind of life the freakshow misfits have created. Fish Boy needles and goads him; he learns the Fish Girl loves him; he chases Emmy when she goes off with a local boy and, brutally murdering the man, finds he has become a cause for a retired Judge and his son. They hide him, get him off with a year in prison and on his return set him up to a job - and the prospect of marriage. But Bat wakes up - normalcy is not for him and it is to the Fish Girl and the carnival he escapes. An odessey which many may find distasteful in its parade of psychological- and physical misfits and in the sordid accoutrements to the plot, but which may attract the market of Nightmare Alley.
