The author's justification for yet another book on the crisis of the church is that "much exciting thinking" goes on in the upper echelons of both the Protestant and Catholic churches - thinking which is rarely communicated to the people in the pews. The present work is intended to bridge that gap. Instead, it aggravates the problem, at least to the extent that the reader is persuaded that the exciting thinking up there is not only uncommunicated but uncommunicable to the pew-bound peasant. There are entertaining moments when Brown describes cartoons from the New Yorker, but heads will nod and rosaries rattle when Brown launches into a dissertation on why "the structural components of the Church cannot be regarded as absolute in the Newtonian sense." All this is well and good if the book is viewed as a synopsis of current theo-intellectual trends intended to put the busy pastor in the picture. But, within the context of the author's stated intention to communicate with and stimulate the grass-roots lay person, it may be allowed that he falls more than a little short of the mark.
