The great affair is to keep moving (R. L. Stevenson) although it seems rather pointless in this improvident, indeed slightly touched, adventure story which certainly forfeits the suave excitement of Canning's earlier books. Thus follow if you will this wild goose (stress goose) chase anent one Nelo, a priest unfrocked and released from prison; Sarah the girl who loves him and would reform him; Xavier, an agent, who has run out of countries to cross and doublecross; someone called the Royal Highness the Bakata of Bakata in whose kingdom the action, mostly dealing in the recovery of Nelo's diamonds, ends. Even if Nelo can never return to the fold, Mr. Canning should. (Kirkus Reviews)
