This is a study about the ideals of humanism as they are manifest in the visual arts. Using the notion of dignity, the author has subjected a number of art works to iconographical analysis. It offers interpretations of "old" images and new insights into the relationship between artist and humanist. He examines works by, among others, Masaccio, Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. The text suggests that the artist assumed much of the interlectual responsibility of humanism by developing the means of accepting the means of effectivly translating its ideals into visally legible terms.
