Quintessentially herself - artless, elegant, mobile, fey, with just a curve of coquetry - Colette appears in these three to four page spot commentaries which are appearing here for the first time. She's hot ("Couldn't you call up two fine dogs with very cold noses?"), or ill ("Not very ill - just enough."), or thinking about Christmas ("a miserable day that stinks of cash"), or fashions so often fetishistic, or the seasons, or the sophisticated certitude of the young, or Duse and by association, Sarah, or children or animals, and flowers - of course. The pleasures are many even if the backward look is accompanied, as so often it is, with a reciprocal sense of loss. Secondary Colette but still - like a string of beads, pretty cut crystal beads.
