Synopsis
"Kidderminster in the Second World War" is a collection of reminiscences of many older inhabitants of the town during the Second World War. Although Kidderminster was officially designated a safe area the life of the district changed considerably. The world-famous carpet industry was put on hold, while munitions manufacture and war work replaced conventional occupations. Food and clothing shortages had to be dealt with, while precautions against air raids and invasion were taken. Evacuees took over some of the schools and there was a huge influx of military personnel - with two military hospitals locally and the billeting of the Army Pay Corps in the town. Holidays, entertainment, street lighting, new toys and sweets all became memories. The reminiscences are illustrated by a wide range of illustrations - ephemera, such as ration books, letters and petrol coupons, as well as photographs.
