James VI and I was a remarkable man in remarkable times. He was a learned scholar, passionate witch-hunter and diligent monarch who presided over the union of the English and Scottish crowns in 1603. The period which his life spanned (1567-1625) was tremendously formative in the making of the British state and in the settlement of the New World. It witnessed the translation of the Bible which has served us ever since and it produced some of the finest of our national literature and drama. Bevan's readable and lively biography provides a reliable and informative introduction to the man and the moment. (Kirkus UK)
