This selection of old photograph visits the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil. taking the reader on a nostalgic jounrey into the past, it shows all aspects of life, from work and transport education, worship and recreation. The end of coal mining and the gutting of the town centre in a 1960s slum clearance scheme have dramatically changed the appearanceof both ton and valley, with a number of landmarks and historic parts of town having disappeared forever. The images in this book will spark many shared memories and show what life was like in a previous age. Merthyr Tydfil has experienced both prosperity and depression over the years, but the ability of the people here to survuve and enjoy life is clearly illustrated in the book. Gathered from a growing collection at the Merthyr Tydfil Public Library, these images have been selected to build a picture of life as it used to be, and of the people, places and events which have played a part in the making of this diverse, modern-day county borough.
