This is a little hard to describe since it could be any one of a number of things, equally attractive - namely Gothic or a fantasia or a horror story with psychedelic paraphernalia or just romantica as they say on the small island of Isola Malcontenta where Philippa Rowantree finds herself indulged, if not imprisoned, in the villa of an inscrutable Count d'Anza. All sorts of things happen - or do they? Philippa hears children's voices; she meets, secretly, the Count's son Vincente who is supposed to be in Rome, or America; she is puzzled by the darker mysteries in the basement where the Minotaur lowers. But then seamlessly, and very skillfully, the past keeps slipping in and out - a renegade artist lover; a brother, Nicky, who is not always brotherly - etc. Mr. Hosegood writes very well in a genre which is usually subliterate and it's all most stylish and seductive.
