Another generous, uneven sampling of Pritchett short fiction (cf. Selected Stories, Collected Stories) - putting such classics as "The Nest Builder" together with undistinguished items from recent collections ("The Worshippers," "The Vice-Consul") and a few uncollected ratifies from magazine pieces or from books published only in England. The result - two-dozen tales spanning five decades - offers a fairly wide, representative introduction to Sir Victor's social-comedy, farce, and slightly more serious character studies. But US readers and libraries will again wonder why the Pritchett canon is being "collected" in such an idiosyncratic, disorganized fashion (in part, the author's own choice, apparently) - and will wish that the unpublished-in-America work could be offered in a volume of its own. (Consider, by comparison, the comprehensive presentation of William Trevor's work, p. 734.) (Kirkus Reviews)
