This historical novel, "Number Eighteen", is the first in a trilogy about George Eefamy who runs away to sea at the age of thirteen from his home in Poole in order to escape from a tyrannical Victorian household. His early childhood had been happy but after he loses his mother and later on his father, his life is ruled by the family of his father's second wife; their oppression and neglect become intolerable. The surname Eefamy is an old English name and holders of that name can still be found in the Poole area of Dorset. The story is loosely based on the true life of the author's wife's grandfather who really did have stepmother trouble and ran away to sea.
