A first novel which will find considerable appreciation for the fine finish of its styling, the discretion and delicacy of its handling of a first love remembered many years later. It is Olivia, from the vantage point of maturity, who tells of her first experience with passion when with "the innocence of ignorance", and from a girlhood walled by Victorian principle and morality, she is sent to a French school. There, an animation, an ardor, she had never known makes its first impact, finds its incarnation in Mlle. Julie, the headmistress to whom several have been attracted and attached. Unaware of the friction she is creating between Mlle. Julie and Mlle. Cara, her partner, Olivia is only partially conscious of the nature of her feelings for Mlle. Julie, until, with Mlle. Cara's suicide, the school is disbanded- and Olivia returns to England.... For a fastidious following, the sensitivity, tenderness and restraint here give this a literary as well as emotional charm.
