One of the most cherished memories of this author is of his boyhood in Japan when in winter his grandfather would tell the wonderful tales of Ooka, the wisest and greatest Japanese Judge for whom "no case was too strange or too small". With his profound wisdom of human strengths and failings, Ooka sought to instruct and edify in his judgments; and here for the amusement and enlightenment of American children is an assortment of his "cases", complete with the maxims and morals on which they are based. Ordering a new pottery dog smashed, ruling a man could be a thief and still be honest, and fining a young man for stealing a smell, all these strange things were done for the purpose of revealing a particular truth. A meaningful collection of provocative folk tales. (Kirkus Reviews)
