Synopsis
This collection of poems chart the life of playwright Ernst Toller from 1909 up to and including his imprisonment in the Weimar Republic, 1919-1924. The earliest poems document an intense love affair from his teenage years until his participation in World War I. Another set of poems see Toller's initial enthusiasm for the war wane until he finally rejects it. His imprisonment in the Weimar Republic is described in graphic detail. The collection provides an insight into Toller's early life and his development as a writer and a political figure.
