In the little magazines (Accent, etc.) these short stories have made a previous appearance, some have come in annual anthologies, some in general anthologies. They introduce to a wider public a writer who manages by indirection a considerable irony, who reflects, through small incident, larger issues of social and religious criticism. The stories alternate predominantly between a defense of the Negro, an attack on the Catholic Church, as with quiet sarcasm they tell of a Monsignor whose Curate does not meet the proprieties of his position, of Father Burner waiting many years for a parish and his final humiliation; of Father Firman and his invincible housekeeper; of a riot staged by Negroes in the South; of a sweet hot trio who refuse obeisance to a white clientele, etc. For those interested in social issues and literary values.
