During the Second World War, Swansea's importance as a port, acting as an important distribution centre for weapons and for troops, and as a location for military industries including munitions manufacture, led to the town being highlighted as a target for enemy attacks. The first air raid took place on 27 June 1940, and over the next three years there were forty-five more attacks, ranging from solitary aircraft dropping a couple of bombs to the appalling Three Nights' Blitz of February 1941, which lasted nearly fourteen hours and during which almost 900 bombs devastated the town centre. Sally Bowler's book is an account of Swansea's experiences during the Second World War, as well as a tribute to all those in the town who kept Swansea's spirit alive through these dark days. Weaving together many personal accounts of the war years, most of them appearing in print for the first time, the author skilfully calls this period back into existence for those who remember these life-changing events, and provides a window onto a lost world for those who don't.
