Canning in a somewhat different mode but in the finest form in years in a hellbent entertainment of love, betrayal, reprisal and the mark of Cain which is here spelled Kingsford. A John Kingsford of middle years, bereft after the death of his wife but indifferent to the loss of his Parliament seat, retires to his stately home where he is joined by an attractive woman and her rich, volatile nephew Carlo. Carlo could go either way. With the knowledge that he is Kingsford's son, he decides to become a gentleman, falls in love with a gift down there, gives up his vices and is cultivating the healthy life while keeping Kingsford under close surveillance - Kingsford who has just discovered his wife's infidelity and plans to kill her lover. But he hasn't the courage of his cuckoldry which leaves Carlo to pick up the long-range rifle and the police to pick up the pieces. . . . A decorative story, full of contrasts and reverses and that touch of class which is always in style. (Kirkus Reviews)
