In the late 1940s, Nick Ardley's parents purchased an old Thames sailing barge. It was an unusual choice of a home in a time when new houses were in great demand after the Second World War, but it provided adequate living space for themselves and their ever-growing family. Nick was lucky enough to be brought up on board, moving school as the barge moved from port to port on the Medway and Thames. The barge was overhauled by Nick's parents, but the children helped too. This is the often moving story of a unique childhood, living aboard a Thames sailing barge.
