In its first major action, the 20th Regiment of Maine Volunteers succeeded in saving the threatened left flank of the Union army. The victory at Little Round Top compiled for the Regiment a record of heroic, bloody and crucial battles which is scarcely surpassed in the annals of American arms. The narrative concerns these feats, but it concerns as well the process by which country bumpkins who defied discipline became first-class fighting men, their individual thoughts and feelings, the overall strategy and course of the Civil War as it became visible in their ubiquitous combat. This variety of themes enriches the narrative, but it also disperses attention and robs the book of a unified pattern. The research is solid. (Kirkus Reviews)
