This book offers a practical guide to the new system of unit fines in the magistrates' courts. Fines are by far the most commonly used sentence in the criminal courts of England and Wales. From 1 October 1992 the statutory arrangements for unit fines, introduced by the Criminal Justice Act 1991, apply to all magistrates' courts. Thousands of solicitors, barristers, magistrates and justices' clerks will have to change practices overnight with effect from that date. This guide is aimed squarely at busy professional practitioners who either spend a great deal of their time in the courts so that they will need to become familiar with the new system very quickly, or who attend infrequently and may need a quick and easy reference guide from time to time. The guide should also be of great assistance to those working around the issue of fines such as probation officers, social workers, CAB advisers and prosecuting bodies.
