A maundering attempt to relate the "basic aims and motives of my work" in conjunction with his life by the former Outsider who identified himself with Van Gogh and Nietzsche and T. E. Lawrence although except for occasional caesuras over destiny and "who am I," one is left with very little that has not been said in any of his 22 books in the last 10 years. But here it all is with overt fluency: the childhood and (too) close relationship with his mother; early affairs and odd jobs; mystical treks (Stonehenge) and travels; one marriage ended when "meditation" became impossible; and finally the writing of the book in the British Museum's Reading Room while sleeping out on Hampstead Heath at night; the notoriety and attacks and lack of privacy; and now, approaching 38, the determination to go on writing while realizing that perhaps success will never come his way again. But then that precocious intellectual bloom of the '50's was chiefly cultivated - through the ideas of other people as once again evidenced in all that is borrowed here from other, greater minds.
