Dr. Loretta Lawson, London teacher and member of the busybody school of sleuthing (A Masculine Ending), in a second appearance - which finds her recuperating from illness and staying in a country cottage owned by wealthy bluestocking Clara Wolstonecroft. The cottage is on the grounds of Clara's estate, which abuts an American air base, and ardent feminist Clara has allowed a women's peace group to camp on her land in a post-Libyan attack protest. Clara has also taken abused wife Peggy under her wing. Meanwhile, Clara's college-student daughter Imogene and womanizing second husband Jeremy are detached observers of her causes; but Loretta, within a few days, has visited the camp, met Peggy, become romantically involved with neighbor Robert Herrin, and shared the women's antipathy to Colin Kendall-Cole, the district's stuffed-shirt M.P. When Clara is found shot to death in her drawing room, Peggy's coincidental disappearance makes her a prime suspect - while Loretta, in possession of a mysterious tape recording, suspects a CIA plot against the women's peace group. There's much twittering speculation and many aimless car trips before Loretta finds a second murder, a likely killer, and a totally unsatisfying finish - no surprise in a meandering, muddled story that provides only sporadic relief from complete boredom.
