"But what if there is thunder and lightning? . . . But what if I forget my lines in the Thanksgiving play? . . . But what if someone hates me?" Whatever anxieties are expressed by this long-haired, blond little girl in longish dresses, they're met with gentle reassurances by her long-haired, blond mother dressed in similar fashion. The questions range from the serious ("But what if you die?") to the peculiar ("But what if the cabbages don't come up?"), the answers from sensible to fanciful. But the dominant note is tenderness ("My loving doesn't die. It stays with you as warm as two pairs of mittens on top of each other"), and the point not so much the harmlessness of lightning, big dogs, or whatever as the security of mother's loving presence. Shecter makes the wistful visions so soft they almost turn to mush, but many will respond to the comforting, warm glow of both words and pictures. (Kirkus Reviews)
